Independence Day of Ukraine

Independence Day of Ukraine, known in Ukrainian as День Незалежності України (Den Nezalezhnosti Ukrainy), is celebrated on 24 August to mark the Declaration of Independence issued in 1991. Prior to this, the Ukrainian diaspora recognized 22 January, the date of the Declaration of Independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918, as the day of independence.

The holiday was first celebrated in its current form on 16 July 1991, coinciding with the first anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine, adopted by the Verkhovna Rada in 1990. Following the Declaration of Independence on 24 August 1991, confirmed by a nationwide referendum on 1 December 1991, the official date of the holiday was changed to 24 August by a parliamentary decision in 1992.

The perception of Independence Day has shifted significantly over the years. In a 2013 poll by the Razumkov Centre, 61% of respondents viewed it as a holiday, while 30.4% considered it an ordinary day off. By 2021, a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) indicated that 37% of Ukrainians regarded Independence Day as one of their favorite holidays.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022, prompted a reevaluation of the holiday's significance. A March 2024 study by KIIS revealed that the popularity of Independence Day had risen to 64%, reflecting a growing sense of national unity and resilience.

Independence Day is typically marked by various celebrations, including military parades in Kyiv, although such parades have been affected by ongoing conflicts. In 2021, a large military parade was held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of independence, featuring over 5,000 troops and numerous foreign military units.

In 2022, celebrations were constrained due to martial law, with public gatherings prohibited. Instead, destroyed Russian military vehicles were displayed in Kyiv, symbolizing resistance against the invasion. The day also saw international support for Ukraine, with events held in various countries to honor its independence.

Notable events in the history of Independence Day include the Chayka Aviation Parade in 1997, which showcased the Ukrainian Air Force, and the postponement of the 2006 celebrations due to a tragic aviation accident that resulted in 170 fatalities.

In 2016, the 'March of the Unconquered' was held following the military parade, honoring those who fought in the Russo-Ukrainian War and the Euromaidan uprising. The celebrations continue to evolve, reflecting the ongoing struggle for sovereignty and national identity.
