Kharkiv Oblast

Kharkiv Oblast is situated in eastern Ukraine, sharing borders with Luhansk Oblast to the east, Donetsk Oblast to the southeast, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast to the southwest, Poltava Oblast to the west, Sumy Oblast to the northwest, and Russia's Belgorod Oblast to the north.

The total area of the oblast is 31,400 square kilometres (12,100 sq mi), which constitutes 5.2% of Ukraine's total territory.

As of 2021, Kharkiv Oblast had a population of 2,598,961, with over half (1.42 million) residing in the city of Kharkiv, the administrative center of the oblast.

The 2001 census indicated that the ethnic composition of the oblast included 70.7% Ukrainians and 25.6% Russians, among other groups. The primary languages spoken are Ukrainian (53.8%) and Russian (44.3%).

Kharkiv Oblast was officially established on 27 February 1932. The region underwent significant administrative changes during the Soviet era, including the abolition of the Kharkov Governorate and the establishment of raions.

The oblast experienced severe hardships during the Holodomor and was a significant battleground during World War II, witnessing multiple battles and atrocities.

The economy of Kharkiv Oblast is predominantly industrial, focusing on sectors such as engineering, metallurgy, and food processing. Agriculture also plays a vital role, with 19,000 square kilometres of arable land.

The region is known for its engineering capabilities, including an airplane plant for space control systems and one of Ukraine's largest gas fields.

During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kharkiv Oblast faced significant military conflict, with parts of the region being occupied. However, a Ukrainian counteroffensive began in September 2022, resulting in the recapture of key areas.

As of 2023, fighting continues in the easternmost parts of the oblast, particularly around the Svatove–Kreminna line.

Kharkiv Oblast is home to various educational institutions, including 55 higher education establishments and numerous vocational schools. In 2020, approximately 104,900 individuals were employed in the education sector.

The region also has notable cultural landmarks, such as the Derzhprom Building and the Intercession Monastery, contributing to its historical and architectural heritage.
