Kyiv

Kyiv is located in the north-central part of Ukraine, straddling both banks of the Dnieper River. As of January 2022, the city's population was recorded at 2,952,301, making it the seventh-most populous city in Europe.

Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, believed to have existed as early as the 5th century. It was a commercial center along a significant trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople and became the capital of Kievan Rus', the first East Slavic state, under Varangian rule in the mid-9th century.

The city faced significant destruction during the Siege of Kiev in 1240, which led to a long period of decline in its influence.

Kyiv regained prominence during the 16th century as a center of Eastern Orthodox learning and later prospered during the Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century.

In 1918, following the October Revolution, the Ukrainian People's Republic declared independence from the Russian Republic, and Kyiv became its capital. After a series of conflicts, including the Ukrainian-Soviet and Polish-Soviet wars, Kyiv was established as the capital of the Ukrainian SSR in 1934.

The city suffered extensive damage during World War II but recovered to become the third-largest city in the Soviet Union.

Following Ukraine's independence in 1991, Kyiv has continued to be the largest and wealthiest city in the country, transitioning towards a market economy and electoral democracy. Despite losing its reliance on the armaments industry, the growth of the services and finance sectors has supported urban development.

Kyiv is recognized as an important industrial, scientific, educational, and cultural center in Ukraine, housing numerous high-tech industries, higher education institutions, and historical landmarks. The city is also served by an extensive public transport network, including the Kyiv Metro.
