Petro Poroshenko

Petro Poroshenko was born on 26 September 1965 in Bolhrad, Odesa Oblast, Ukraine, into an ethnic Ukrainian family. His father, Oleksiy Poroshenko, was an engineer and government official, while his mother, Yevhenia Serhiyivna Hryhorchuk, worked as an accountant.

Poroshenko spent his childhood in Tighina, where he practiced judo and sambo. He graduated in 1989 from the Kyiv University with a degree in economics and later founded a legal advisory firm.

Poroshenko began his political career in 1998 when he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada. He initially aligned with the United Social Democratic Party of Ukraine and later played a significant role in the creation of the Party of Regions.

In December 2001, he became campaign chief for Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine Bloc and was appointed Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council after Yushchenko's election as president in 2005.

Poroshenko was elected president of Ukraine in 2014, winning 55.46% of the vote in the first round. His presidency was characterized by efforts to address the war in Donbas, signing the Minsk Agreements, and initiating military reforms.

He was a strong advocate for Ukraine's European integration, signing the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement in June 2014 and a visa-free travel agreement in June 2017.

Poroshenko is known as a prominent oligarch in Ukraine, with significant business interests including the Roshen confectionery group, which earned him the nickname 'Chocolate King.'

He has also been involved in various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, and media, with ownership of the 5 Kanal television channel.

After his presidency, Poroshenko remained active in Ukrainian politics as a people's deputy in the Verkhovna Rada and as the leader of the European Solidarity party. He is regarded as an influential figure in contemporary Ukrainian politics.
